Six Directions at Once

This stuff is surprisingly thorough and very well put together. It seems to crystalize a conversation I've been having with myself forever.

A large part of why I'm in school is that I have been rattling around with modest success in any or all of these six steps for most of my career. This may be largely due to the fact that as a graphic designer and business owner, I have long been attending to the needs of being a design professional. Cop out? Maybe.

That said, I must confess that I am transfixed by form. When someone masterfully manipulates the form, I'm stopped cold. I'm primarily a book designer by trade. The publisher and marketing people determine the first 2 or 3 steps, which puts me in a position to work almost entirely with the idiom, structure and surface. I might say that these are my strengths, but it also seems woefully limited.

One of the things that resonates in McClouds breakdown is how the various individuals progress and stall. It reminds us just how difficult it is to make a lasting mark - one recognized by more than just those close to you. That said, I always felt that understanding and developing within a form was a noble task. In fact, an exhilarating one. Not to mention; working with structure, craft and surface can keep most of us very busy. The good news is that these things can move you through life. Push you to be fascinated, connected and involved. The question I'm asking these days is: Am I doing this to explore yet another form? ...Probably - But new media tranforms the common practice and perception of design communication. In short, it gives it new life. So, hopefully, I'm not just exploring it as another form, but as a way to pull many together to form one. Will it be a singular voice? I guess the fun is finding that out.
