VISUAL CONCEPTS I
COURSE CALENDAR


week 1 INTRODUCTION Overview of the course / Syllabus / Discuss lab policy and availability / Discuss course requirements / Brief introduction to Illustrator and the pen tool / discuss mark making assignment.

week 2 MARK MAKING Discuss the relationship of natural media and technology: Navigate the Adobe Photoshop page / document, guides & tools. Mark making, line weight, gesture and some drawing / Push the fabric provided by the electronic tools / Discuss homework.

week 3 DRAWING-CONTOUR Basic image making concepts : line weight/ point, line & plane / understand and develop diagrammatic shapes from 3/d references / contour and gesture drawing

week 4 MAPPING LIGHT the gray scale / value through accumulation of mark and line / chiaroscuro / texture /translate the light and dark information from a painting or photograph.

week 5 TWO DIMENSIONAL DESIGN In keeping with the manipulation of the flat surface, we explore the structure of space, the division of space and the composition within that.

week 6 COLOR THEORY Introduce color theory: Discuss analogous color, complementary color, value, saturation and hue / build the color wheel in Illustrator and Photoshop.

week 7 COLOR IMAGE CONSTRUCTION Define the color properties of an image by working from a grayscale photograph and adjusting color in photoshop.

week 8 MID TERM REVIEW Prepare color output of color assignment / critique / student discussion

week 9 IMAGE STRUCTURE Review the compositional skeloton of an image. Reduce it to 2d forms and begin to relate color and the division of space.

week 10 2/D COLOR COMPOSITION-COLOR INTERACTION Develope compositions based on principles of color / Observe color behavior as a result of interaction of other color / cause colors to recede and project.

week 11 TYPE-INTRODUCTION Introduce type particulars: type styles, letter forms and voices / Typographic terminology / Type as form: concordance and contrast / explore type and shape and type as composition.

week 12 TYPE-HIERARCHY OF INFORMATION Incorporate the grid, color, scale, space and type into the display of information / apply design concepts to type arrangement / Explore type and space.

week 13 TYPE AS VOICE Configure type to express the meaning of a word by manipulating placement, order and scale.

week 14 TYPE AND IMAGE Discuss structural elements of an image: form and counter form, scale, value, cropping / image vernacular and information / work with the structure of the image to determine type composition.

week 15 PREPARE FINAL Cumulative work derived from knowledge gained through the semester / interim crit / work studio

week 16 Full class critique
