VISUAL CONCEPTS I

This course is the first semester of an introductory studio class dealing with the concepts and practical constraints of producing imagery for the screen. We will explore fundamental drawing and design elements used in visual communication thus developing methods to speak through images, type and composition. Developing gesture with the use of the digital tools will be stressed as well as Individual creativity and craft. Most exercises will be set-up in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. A one-sheet describing each assignment will be provided on the first day of each assignment. All dates are subject to change at the discretion of the instructor.

    Course Goals
  • Increased competence, patience, discipline and persistence in the undertaking and completion of a visual communication problem
  • Introduction of drawing skills: value, line, scale, gesture, etc.
  • Invention of personal drawing skills
  • Exploration of various kinds of image making through the use of color, digital painting and collage
  • Type composition and manipulation
  • Increased visual awareness
  • Accumulation and implementation of skills and ideas in a progressive manner

  • Requirements
  • Class attendance and participation
  • Completion of all assignments based on dates given
  • Daily interaction with personal journal / sketchbook
  • A portfolio of work from the duration of class

  • Evaluation & Grading
  • Evaluation will be conducted in the form of critues: Personal critiques will take place at mid term and at the end of the course. Group critiques will be held at the middle and end of each section
  • Each student will be judged on the quality, experimentation, and improvement that their work shows
  • Participation in class work and completion of external assignments will affect grades
  • Incomplete or unsatisfactoery work will recieve a falling grade
  • Make-up assignments may be made available on a situational basis
  • More than TWO absences will adversley affect your grade
