IN CLASS
OBJECTIVE: This project serves as an introduction to publication design and to the many typographic decisions that must be made regarding text type, display type, heads, subheads, captions, folios, illustrations, and their placement on a grid. This project also puts into practice lessons learned from previous projects. Samples below were part of in-class demonstrations
IN CLASS ASSIGNMENT: TWO PAGE SPREAD | Using the supplied type create a TWO PAGE SPREAD. Create one or two versions using grid techniques and regarding space, hierarchy, proximity and typeface selection. On the later versions of this assignment, add a photograph/image as well as a piece of line art. The line art must be reduced to a bit mapped gif so that it can be used as a logo mark or seal. See the above sample for one possible usage. |

OUT OF CLASS
THE TYPOGRAPHIC LANDSCAPE In preparation for the final week of class, write a short essay or outline on the ubiquitous language of typography in our day to day life. It could be a personal observation or a series of references. You will use this text in your assignment. The final piece is to be a booklet that showcases this essay. Also, photograph typography in your surroundings. Signage, printed material, shapes that resemble letterforms, etc. We will bring these into class and assemble all of the pieces into a four page book (front and back cover with one inside spread). Anything you can do to get a head start will greatly enhance the project outcome.
